The man who kidnapped Elizabeth when she was 14, held her hostage and sexually abused her for nine exhausting months has finally accepted his sentence — he will expend the respite of his life in prison.
Elizabeth Smart, now 23, and her parents Mary Katherine and Ed Smart witnessed the sentencing in a Salt resembling City courtroom on Wednesday, May 25, where the adjudicator declared that her kidnapper Brian David Mitchell would be incarcerated in federal prison for the respite of his life. The man who completed her world a living horrendous will finally get the reprobation he deserves.
In December 2010, a jury criminal Mitchell of felony kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for the intention of employing in sexual activity./
Elizabeth addressed both the court and Mitchell on Wednesday, saying, “I don’t have very much to say to you. I know exactly what you did. I know that you know what you did was mistaken. You did it with a full knowledge.”
“I also wish for you to know that I have an amazing life now, that no subject what you do it will never change me again. You took away nine months of my life that can never be returned, but in this life or next, you will have to be apprehended liable for those actions, and I hope you are ready for when that time comes.”
And her father completed certain to speak his silence as well, letting Mitchell know that he will bear, but not nearly as inferior as his daughter did during the nine months of her detention.
“Your perversion and utilization of religion is not a defense,” Ed Smart said. “It is nauseating and it is an abuse that anyone should despise. Regardless of what the defense has proposed, you put Elizabeth during nine months of mental hell. I hope at some time in your life you find what out you have done is mistaken. Whether it’s your time on earth or in infinity, you’re going to have to face the fault. … I hope at some spot in your life you’re going to be able to atone of it.”
We are happy Elizabeth’s case has finally come to a finish, although we know what Mitchell put her through will be imprinted in her mentality for the respite of her life.
